Tambaram Railway Station Development - Both way escalator at Tambaram east entrance, one way escalator for ease of carrying baggage for express train departure and arrival platforms, Suburban coaches with closing doors by working with Anna University, Indian restaurants in Tambaram West and East side, Lifts with sponsors or Govt with name etched to help reach from platform to foot over bridge directly, Shelter missing in main platform where express train stops, Need more lighting at Tambaram east side

Tambaram Railway stations, Chennai which is to be made as new terminal by June 2016. Following points . I want PM & Suresh Prabhu to open by video conferencing.
Need for 3 escalators & Lifts– 1) Tambaram East side has an escalator only in one direction. I don’t know why Railways always hesitates to put escalators in both directions. Please put escalator to get down from top to bottom 2) There is a platform separately for movement of trains towards southern districts. Need for escalator in downward direction. 3) There is a platform for movement towards Chennai. But after getting down it is very difficult without escalator to carry all baggage. Need for escalator in upward direction from platform to over bridge above platforms. Please tambaram MP, MLA to provide some funds. Ask State Govt, Chennai corporation to also provide funds and at least 5 lakhs by Railway Minister personally and 2 lakhs by PM so make a mark that they had real hand in building 3rd terminal of Chennai. A.K. Mittal, DRM, GMS can also do.
The lifts if put up in the portion from platform to the over bridge directly so that public with wheelchair and senior citizens who cant get onto escalator can use the lifts. A lift from 3 platforms needed which are heavily used. 1 for suburban platform, 1 for express trains departure and 1 for arrival. Name of those who funded can put in a stone etched
LED display of coach positions in platforms is missing mainly in express train departure stations and in suburban stations. Public run here and there not knowing where the coach will be there. With the growth of Digital and Electronics still Railways in Tambaram a major boarding station near Chennai but the details of coach position are put up in board only. It will be very helpful if the coach position is displayed in LED in platforms. Southern Railways is very weak in this area which needs improvement
Lack of LED display in suburban stops like Tambaram where lakhs of people use daily. The LED display in stations similar to Mumbai suburban with exact time of departure, coach position – first class, ladies coaches, vendor coach. Soon A/C EMU so plan for that also. The LED display must display current railway time, the time of departure/arrival of train, destination of train and route also.
Lack of LED display on the foot overbridge on top of platform in Tambaram to display the EMU train timings. As many passengers wait on foot overbridge with no availability of which platform train will come and have to run from top to platform to catch train. Lighting on entire Tambaram East side is still very less and better lighting needed with LED scheme of power ministry at parking area, walking path.
Regarding the problem of open doors in Suburban trains - Tambaram EMU shed should partner with Anna University, IIT Madras and private universities to use Fiberglass technology to work on closing doors independently and not wait for Railways to setup team at Central level. Independent research by Tambaram EMU Shed, Chennai and Mumbai Suburban will lead to more trials and faster fixing of the issue of doors remaining open in the suburban trains. I am not looking for just press release in this regard real work needed to solve the issue and prevent loss of lives and prevent stupid passengers who get onto running trains and Railway staff have to face lot of issues. The metro doors can be purchased separately also in order to implement the idea with centralised control, the doors should have rubber portion at the closing points so if someone hand gets stuck they can pull themselves out. There needs to be sensors so suddenly if someone gets stuck it will open and re-close. Once implemented the suburban will help saving around 100 lives every year which itself is a big number. I don’t believe the current metal doors can be used as it should removed or will cause more loss of lives as they don’t have sensors or rubber portions at the centre. The doors are too heavy and cant be operated by motors even if installed and wont be efficient. So take on single EMU train set and implement all doors by either buying the Metro coach doors and start implementing and do trial. Use fibre glass or steel with glass or whatever but consult Universities to do this fast. It does not require budget and all just do it is the responsibility of Railways with revenue earned with passenger tickets.
Require multi-level bike and car parking as most bikes in Tambaram East & West side don’t have space to park bikes. Space to triple parking of bikes will lead to more usage of Railway station. Currently most avoid the station as there is overflow of bikes from the parking lots as it is not enough. Allocating space under PPP for multi-level parking alone will bring in huge revenues. Full PPP station of Tambaram is different but PPP of some areas for period of 10 years to anyone who can develop multi-level parking of 5 floors with space to hold 5,000 bikes, 2,000 cars needed. The 6th & 7th floor can be asked to have Theatre and Food courts to invite more participant's.
Food Courts are missing in Tambaram stations compared to Egmore stations. Need for Indian restaurants with capacity to server more than 1,000 passengers every hour. I read an article which says Railways has invited International brands to have pizza and others it is ok but Indian restaurants will only help many people. Sweet stall to buy sweets. ATM in platform of express train and suburban trains. Restaurants at East and west side needed as it is scope for huge revenue with lakhs of users.
Shelter on one side of Tambaram east side platform where express trains stop to go towards southern districts doesn’t have shelter. Around 400 metres lacks shelter.
Ad revenue from Tambaram EMU has been very low. Southern Railway must do e-auction of space for period of 6 months, 1 year, 2 years for the Tambaram station space on overbridge, entrance, space on top of escalator, EMU coaches inside, EMU coach exterior, EMU train engine front portion below glass and top at premium rates, full train EMU ads. Ads by e-auction will help get higher price instead of tender. Trial of e-auction for some identified EMU trains which run at peak hours can be done. Try to find sponsors for Escalators and permanent ad space to sponsor for escalator and lifts. The sponsor can take permission to setup and use that entire escalator space for ads. Especially the one towards platforms not the entry and exit escalator. The entry and exit escalator must be with Railways. Because ads and sponsors will target the entry points but passengers face lot of difficulty in taking baggage to reach to top by steps as more middle class move to upper class the baggage has increased and still taking by steps is not possible. I know Railways doesn’t have funds and cannot spend too much also. So find sponsors to entirely own and maintain the escalators and lifts to and from platforms along with steps also as sometimes escalators will not work. 15 years ads space and then hand over to Railways and permanent etching of name of sponsor near the escalator will be done can be assured. Invite Vodafone, Airtel, Hyundai, Maruti, Ford, DELL, Samsung, Sony, Tata Sky, Political parities, Actors and by public ads to participate in these activities. Same can be tried for Egmore and Central also as passengers face lot of issues taking baggage by steps. Design will be escalator with parallel steps and lifts in centre portion. Other than entire PPP of stations small steps like this will also help in long run for development.
